Divorce or widowhood can find a woman in a completely different financial situation than what she's been accustomed to. Recent research shows that some women encounter a drop in overall income, wealth, and retirement security after these life events. However many others transition successfully into independent financial security, with confidence about their future. The primary factor is to take positive actions as soon as possible.
Placing attention on a few financial basics is an important first step. For women who have previously shared financial responsibilities with a significant other, it can be reassuring to create a solid base before addressing more complex issues.
Having a solid understanding of the financial basics can serve as a first step to wealth building and provide some flexibility in the big picture of financial management.
